The Importance of Proper Breathing for Optimal Body Function

The Importance of Proper Breathing for Optimal Body Function

Introduction:

It may sound simple, but the function of the respiratory system and ribcage is crucial for the overall well-being of our bodies. It plays a significant role not only in respiration, the nervous system, and the parasympathetic system, but also in the musculoskeletal system. From personal experiences shared by colleagues and witnessing the results in my clinic, I have no doubt about the importance of ribcage in optimal functioning.

The Significance of Nasal Breathing:

Have you ever caught yourself sighing and resorting to mouth breathing, especially when faced with tight deadlines or unexpected pressure? Here’s the thing: when you breathe through your mouth, you activate neck muscles like the sternocleidomastoid and scalenes as accessories to breathing. As these muscles tighten, the elevation of the ribcage becomes limited, and full inflation of the lungs is compromised. On the other hand, nasal breathing allows for deeper breaths without engaging these muscles. Additionally, exhaling should take longer. Give it a try now, perform 5 cycles of breathing and focus on exhaling as long as you can. Notice how you feel afterward. By doing this, you’ve kick-started a healthy breathing pattern that positively impacts various systems in your body.

Breathing In:

During inhalation, the following occur:

  • The ribcage elevates.
  • The diaphragm descends.
  • The pelvic floor muscles relax.
  • The transverse abdominis engages.
  • The rectus abdominis remains relaxed.

Breathing Out:

During exhalation, the following occur:

  • The ribcage depresses.
  • The pelvic floor ascends.
  • The abdominals activate.
  • The obliques engage.
  • The back muscles relax.

The Role of Breathing Patterns:

While factors such as your job and stress levels may contribute to tightness in your neck and back, it’s essential to consider the impact of your breathing pattern. In many cases, it can be a significant factor.
