30 years ago I was running across a road on my way to a disco and ‘pop’ went my ankle…I had managed to rupture the 3 ligaments on the outside of the left ankle and boy was it sore!It really didn’t fit into my plan especially as I was doing a lot of running at the time.It was like a balloon and the pain that night was 11 out of 10 I’m not joking. So I spent 4 days in hospital having reconstructive surgery on the ankle stitching the ligaments back.Of course physio followed and 2 months on crutches. My recent leg press in the gym has reminded of this old injury so I’m re-habing like mad!
Ligaments -bad ones can be worse than a fracture-they are the stabilisers for the joints and when torn are slow to heal 6 weeks -3 months. The blood supply is poor that is one of the main reasons. They are not very elastic either so once damaged the injury really needs to be re-habed for the muscles to strengthen around it and for the nervous system(propioception) to re-learn.Otherwise it is easy to re-injure the already overstretched ligaments.
Here are 3 great exercises for old injured ankles-new ones these are probably too soon.
